The Benefits and Drawbacks of Closed and Open Work Spaces

If you have been looking for ways to improve your workplace, you may wonder about the pros and cons of cubicles and open workspaces. Both of these workplace options can offer significant benefits, but you will need to determine which one is best for your needs.

They Save Money on Office Setup Costs

If you have a tight budget for setting up an office, consider buying cubicles. Not only do they come in different shapes and sizes, but they also help reduce costs.

These workstations can also be customized to fit the needs of your employees. Some include storage space, so your workers can keep their workspace organized. Others have whiteboards and chalkboards. You can add under-the-shelf lighting to make waiting rooms and lobbies more inviting.

If you’re looking to buy cubicles, consider purchasing pre owned cubicles. This can save you 80 percent or more of the setup costs of new models. Also, these units are in good condition. They’re typically steam-cleaned and come from a previous owner.

Refurbished cubicles can also be bought for a fraction of the cost. But, refurbished cubicles are usually less durable than used cubicles.

    They Reduce Distractions

Cubicles are a great way to keep workers productive without sacrificing their privacy. By maintaining employees separate from other workers, they are less likely to be distracted by the noises, conversations, or other activities around them.

However, cubicles aren’t the only solution for minimizing distractions. An open office can be a real distraction magnet. Employees are exposed to many stimuli, which can detract from productivity and reduce job satisfaction. For this reason, more companies are considering soundproof cubicles to improve employee productivity.

In a recent study, the University of California, Irvine discovered that the open office is not a miracle cure. More than half of workers are exposed to visual and auditory distractions daily, costing a company 86 minutes per employee per day. And in an open environment, employees are also more susceptible to germs, which can spread quickly.

They Eliminate Barriers Between Employees and Supervisors

Cubicles have been around for a while now, and you’ve already seen them in your office. These partitions allow workers to work in privacy while also serving as a physical barrier to keep distractions at bay. However, cubicles do have some downsides.

While cubicles offer employees much privacy, it can be better. Especially in open workspaces, there can be noise problems. In fact, a study at the University of Sydney found that half of the workers would like to be satisfied with good privacy in their workplace.

Fortunately, there are ways to mitigate the adverse effects of cubicles. Including quiet stations in the layout is one way to achieve this. Having a designated space for employees to do subtle work can make for a more productive and effective team.

    They Promote Creativity

Whether you’re building a new office or upgrading your existing one, there are several things you can do to promote creativity. From choosing the right color to incorporating art into your decor, you can create a workspace that inspires and enhances the creativity of your employees.

A genuinely creative work reflects the values and culture of your company. Whether you have a large open office or a bespoke workplace, the design can influence the energy and creativity of your staff.

The modern office has gone through many changes in the past 20 years. Workplaces are now influenced by faster technologies, new generations of professionals and a renewed focus on health and hygiene.

Technology plays a huge role in fostering productivity and creativity. New devices are being developed that are designed for mobile teamwork. And as the pandemic continues to take a toll on health, workplaces are becoming more hygienic.
