What is the Metaverse?
This question may seem strange, but most people haven’t heard of it. The Metaverse is simply “a shared virtual aggregate space created by the fusion of virtual augmented reality and physically persistent virtual space, including the sum of all virtual worlds, augmented reality, and the Internet.

When it comes to what the “metaverse” means today, it’s a bit like talking about what the “Internet” meant in the 1970s. The groundwork has been laid for a new mode of communication, but until it is fully realized, no one can predict what the final product will look like. So, while it was true when the “Internet” was around the corner, not all of its expected outcomes were accurate.
On the other hand, for now, the concept of the metaverse is getting a lot of marketing hype. Facebook in particular is in a particularly vulnerable position after Apple’s decision to limit ad tracking negatively impacted the company’s finances. Facebook’s image of a future where everyone has a digital wardrobe to flip through is irreconcilable with the fact that Facebook is actually interested in making money selling virtual clothing.
What does the word “metaworld” mean?
To help you better understand how ambiguous and confusing the word “metaverse” is, here’s an activity to try: replace the word “metaverse” in the sentence with the word “cyberspace” in your mind. In more than 90 percent of cases, the meaning will not change significantly.
That’s because the term “information technology” doesn’t actually refer to any particular type of technology, but to the broad variation in the way we interact with information technology. And the name itself has the potential to become obsolete in the near future, even if the exact technology it was originally defined for becomes more widely available and accepted. Virtual reality, which is characterized by a virtual environment that persists even when you’re not playing a game, and augmented reality, which combines features of the digital and physical worlds, are examples of technologies that can be found in virtual worlds.
However, these environments are not necessarily only accessible through virtual or augmented reality. One possibility for the virtual world of the Metaverse is a component of Fortnite that can be accessed via a computer, video game console, or even a smartphone. The term also refers to the digital economy, where users can make and buy goods, as well as sell them. It’s also interoperable, allowing virtual objects like clothes or cars to be transferred from one platform to another, according to some of the more utopian visions of virtual worlds.
Buying a shirt at the mall and wearing it to a movie is perfectly acceptable in the real world. Most virtual identities, avatars, and inventories currently only exist on one platform, but Metaverse lets you create a character that you can take with you, just like you can copy and paste your profile picture from one social site to another.
It’s hard to understand what it all means, because when you hear the description above, it’s natural to think, “Wait, isn’t this already there?” It’s hard to understand what it all means. You can put on an Oculus VR headset and enter your own virtual reality world. In fact, is that what “Metaverse” refers to? Are these just some new genre of video games?
Yes and no, to be honest. If we declare Fortnite to be the “metaverse,” it’s like declaring Google to be the “internet.” While it’s assumed that you can spend a lot of time chatting, buying items, learning, and playing Fortnite, that doesn’t necessarily mean it encompasses the entire metaverse.
Google is creating parts of the Internet from physical data centers to the security layer, but Epic gamefi, the company behind the hit video game Fortnite, is also developing parts of the virtual world. That’s not the only thing that does this. Tech giants like Microsoft and Facebook — the latter of which just changed its name to Meta to better represent the work, although we’ll still have to get used to the new name — will be responsible for some of that work. Many other companies, like Nvidia, Unity, Roblox, and even Snap, are also involved in building the infrastructure that could one day be the foundation of Metaverse. This concludes most of the discussion of what a metaverse is and what it contains. We have a rough idea of the elements that currently exist in our so-called metaverse, and we know which companies are investing in the concept, but we’re still not sure what it represents.
The social networking site Facebook thinks it will contain a fictional mansion where you can invite all your friends to meet. Sorry Meta, but I still don’t understand what they’re talking about. Microsoft seems to believe that virtual meeting rooms, such as those used to train new employees or communicate with distant colleagues, can be implemented. The tone and content of these future visions range from hopeful to outright fan fiction.
